Sponsored Research & IP Asset Investigation

All too often universities fall victim to inadvertent IP evaporation. When companies sponsor research at a university or other research institution, all parties enter the relationship with the best intentions. Over time, however, the actual ownership of the IP can become muddied. It is not uncommon for a sponsoring company to end up with the IP created from the Sponsored Research grant without providing remuneration or ownership to the university or research institution.

Invotex assists university and research institution clients by identifying these situations and assisting in the negotiations for compensation when necessary. Many of our clients have found that engaging an independent third-party, such as Invotex, enables them to maintain relationships and minimize conflicts. Invotex offers the following Sponsored Research services:

  • Complete IP investigation or a targeted investigation on any component of IP, depending on the client’s need
  • Audits of past and present research agreements to assure that all agreements have been identified
  • Analysis of each agreement to determine if any IP generated from the agreement has “evaporated”
  • Calculation of the value of the IP and negotiating the appropriate compensation due to the university for its ownership interest
